Academics at St. Thomas

Classes LKG to X, taught in English on the CBSE pattern, with the school affiliated to the State Board.

Academic overview

Excellence, skill and character — taught together.

St. Thomas School stands for academic excellence, skill development and character formation. The school seeks to nurture students who are intellectually well-informed, morally upright, socially responsible, emotionally balanced and spiritually oriented.

Homework, project work, weekly and unit tests and term examinations are the means of assessment. They show the growth of the student as well as revealing areas of weakness, and parents and students are expected to give them due seriousness — they form an integral part of the teaching-learning programme.

Students in the higher classes are expected to put in a minimum of three and a half hours of private study at home each day, in order to finish their home tasks and prepare their lessons. Home tasks must be done neatly and completely each day.

Private tuitions are not encouraged. Students of St. Thomas are not permitted to take tuition from the teachers of this school.

Examination & promotion

The rules that decide a promotion

Pass mark
A student must secure a minimum of 40% in a subject to pass.
Attendance
A minimum of 75% of class days is required (examination board rule). Below this, a student is disqualified from writing the examination and from promotion.
Basis of promotion
The year's record of work, together with the average of the examinations held during the whole year. Regular attendance and steady work are conditions for promotion.
Class VIII → IX and IX → X
Strictly on eligibility. Those who fail to secure the minimum required marks in more than one subject will not be enrolled in Class IX, and will not be promoted from Class IX to Class X.
Class VIII completion
Those who fail in more than one subject, and in English and Hindi, in Class VIII are issued a completion certificate from the school.
Repeating
A student who repeats consecutively twice in the same standard will not be permitted to continue studies in the school.
Results
The results declared at the end of the year are final and cannot be reconsidered.

Sitting the examinations

  • No arrangement can be made to hold any examination before or after the date laid down by the school management.
  • Absence from a test or examination means total loss of marks for those subjects, and excludes a student from being considered for promotion.
  • No re-test or re-examination is held for a student who fails to appear. Such an absence, without a grave reason and without the Principal's approval, implies incompletion and requires the student to repeat.
  • Any use of unfair means, or tampering with evaluated answer papers or a report card, is punishable at the discretion of the school authorities. A student detected using unfair means is debarred from continuing the examination and that examination is cancelled, which affects the final promotion.
  • All fee dues must be cleared before each terminal examination. On clearance an Admit Card is issued, which the student must bring during the examination days; without it the student will not be allowed to write.

Report cards

  • After the Quarterly and Half Yearly examinations parents are invited to see their ward's answer sheets, interact with the class teacher and subject teachers, and take the report card.
  • Signing and taking the report card or result is necessary for the student's continuation in the next term.

Discipline & the school diary

How the school day is kept.

St. Thomas gives special attention to inculcating a high standard of moral values and discipline. Parents and guardians are requested to co-operate with the school authorities by ensuring regular attendance and punctuality, and strict adherence to the rules.

Arrival & departure

  • Students must arrive at least ten minutes before the first bell.
  • After arrival, students go to their classes and prepare for the first period or do self-study.
  • No student may leave the premises during school hours without written permission from the Principal or Vice Principal; the gate pass is submitted to the watchman.
  • Students and guardians follow the instructions of the staff on duty at arrival and departure.

Attendance & leave

  • A minimum of 75% attendance is required for promotion.
  • Absence must be covered by a written leave application; for two days or more it must be signed by the parent and countersigned by the Principal or Vice Principal.
  • Absence of three or more days on medical grounds must be confirmed by a medical certificate.
  • Continuous absence without information for more than eight working days is treated as the student's decision to leave, and the name is struck off the rolls.

The school diary

  • The diary is brought to school daily and is the medium of communication between school and home.
  • Students note down daily lessons, homework and instructions in it.
  • Records of non-attendance and late coming are entered on the assigned pages.
  • Remarks must be signed by the parent or guardian on the same day they are given.

Punctuality

A student who is late for the assembly and first period is not admitted to class without permission, and the entry is recorded in the diary. If a student is late more than three days in a year, a fine of Rs. 20/- per day is submitted to the class teacher by the parents.

A safe campus

St. Thomas keeps zero tolerance for any sort of sexual abuse or bullying. A lady teacher is specially assigned as in-charge of girls, and an Internal Complaints Committee is constituted to deal with such cases. Abusive language, bullying and physical fights cause immediate suspension and, in serious matters, dismissal.

Student safety

Internal Complaints Committee.

Zero tolerance for abuse or bullying

Constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, No. 14 of 2013. A lady teacher is specially assigned as in-charge of girls, and the school keeps zero tolerance for any sort of abuse or bullying.

Fee guidelines

How fees are paid

  • School fees are paid in four quarters / instalments.
  • After the annual result and promotion, promoted students pay the first quarter fee during the prescribed dates and thus enrol in the promoted class before the new session begins.
  • From the second quarter onwards, the quarterly instalment is paid by the 20th of the first month of that quarter.
  • If fees are not paid by the last date prescribed, a late fee of Rs. 20/- per day is payable.
  • A student's name is liable to be struck off the rolls if dues remain unpaid for more than 30 days after the due date, unless waived by the appropriate authority in very exceptional cases.
  • All dues must be paid before each terminal examination, irrespective of the due date.
  • Students are liable to be charged a full fee as long as their names are officially on the rolls.
Fee amounts are not published here.
The school's printed prospectus sets out how fees are paid but does not list the amounts. Please ask the school office for the current fee structure — this page will never guess it.

Certificates

  • A Bonafide Certificate, when applied for, is issued from the office after six working days.
  • A Transfer Certificate is issued once all dues are cleared; a written application is required at least three days in advance.

Transport & conveyance

The school operates its own buses, which can be seen on the campus. Routes, stops and charges are not set out in the printed prospectus, so they are not listed here. Please ask the school office about transport for your area.

Note to parents & guardians

What the school asks of families

The school earnestly solicits, and indeed requires, the maximum co-operation of parents from day to day — especially by ensuring the regular attendance and discipline of your ward, and by checking diaries and notebooks regularly.

  1. Parents should attend functions organised by the school for them, such as parent-teacher meetings and report card day.
  2. Unauthorised persons — tutors, elder brothers or sisters, relatives or neighbours — are not allowed to attend these meetings on behalf of the parent, unless the parent requests it in writing for a valid reason.
  3. Occasional reports from teachers or administrators must be countersigned as proof that they have been read.
  4. When writing to the school, please give the full name, standard, section and roll number of your ward.
  5. Parents and guardians should not visit classes or interact with teachers except with the approval of the Principal or Vice Principal.
  6. Criticism of a teacher or the school in the presence of the student should be scrupulously avoided. If you have a legitimate complaint, meet the Principal without fear of reprisal.
  7. A child who is ill should not be sent to school. The school does not provide medical treatment except first aid; parents will be called and it is their responsibility to take the child home.
  8. Please notify the school in writing of any change of address or telephone number.
Education starts at home. Values are not taught, they are absorbed — parents are the role models for the child.
